SCORE RELIEF

THE FILM SCORING CONTEST WITH A HEART

First launched in 2020, and successfully run three times, our amazing Score Relief campaign is the free-to-enter film scoring competition with a heart.

Score Relief is about the community coming together to celebrate creativity while contributing to real change via our optional charity fundraiser for arts-related charity.  So far our community has raised in the region of $25,000 in donations through Score Relief.

Each winter, around New Year, we provide our community with a high-quality, genuinely challenging, video to re-score and submit, for a chance to win amazing prizes.  Our prize pool is worth tens of thousands of dollars, judges have included such luminaries as Oscar winner Mychael Danna and, excitingly, the winner gets to have their music performed by a real Orchestra and recorded/mixed in high quality audio with a stunning video record of the session.  You can find videos of all the previous winners’ orchestral sessions on our YouTube channel and you also have the chance to compare the winning mockups, created in DAW, with the orchestral versions performed by real musicians, which is very informative!

Score Relief’s scoring contest runs alongside our voluntary charity fundraiser, which brings the community together in support of an arts-related charity of our choice. We are honoured to have supported In Place of War and Backup Hardship Fund in the past.

For composers, taking part is already a success but we offer thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes, principal of which is the opportunity to have your music performed and recorded by session orchestra Northern Film Orchestra at the prestigious Stoller Hall in Manchester, England. Judges have included Guy Michelmore, Oscar winner Mychael Danna and other successful professional composers.  For 2024 we also introduced orchestral sessions as prizes for four runners-up and you can also see their sessions on our YouTube channel.

  • 2024

2024 saw the third iteration of Score Relief, once again supporting In Place of War, a global charity that helps with grassroots change-makers in music and across the arts to help communities rebuild by transforming a culture of violence and suffering into hope, opportunity and freedom.

Composers were challenged to re-score the superb animation Wing It! from Blender and were provided with a helpful pack of guides and instructions, including, for the first time, a spotting sheet that was created with help from Wing It’s official composer Mariana Calegari.

For the first time we awarded FIVE orchestral sessions as prizes and our Overall Winner composition was by Joseph Alexander.  You can see the comparison of his original winning mockup and the final rendition by Northern Film Orchestra here:

You can see more from Score Relief 2024 here.  Wing It! is available for composers and sound designers to download for re-working, from our library.
